After coming from two behind on Tuesday to beat Littlehampton Town at Homelands, Ashford United boss Danny Kedwell has challenged his squad for three more points this weekend when East Grinstead Town come calling.
Goals from James Dunne, Louis Collins and Barry Fuller clinched the comeback win and when talking to KSN this week, Kedwell challenged his side to win back-to-back League games for the first time this season.
“We must repeat Tuesday at the weekend and go on a run really. All the hard work Tuesday and we don’t win Saturday means nothing,” Kedwell told us.
“We have to get back-to-back and then three, four, five wins on the spin to get away from the wrong end of the table, we have the ability to, we have the players to. You can see that when we have been losing they are hurting and I think that took a toll where they were trying so hard as well, and when you try that hard, you make the silly mistakes that have been costing us!”
“The win Tuesday really was much needed,” the Ashford boss admitted. “It’s been a bit tough the last few weeks with players out injured, we have had six at the same time to our starting side it’s been tough. We hadn’t really had a bad performance until we lost 2-1 at Lancing last week. We have had a lot of academy players in our squads to make the numbers up, but now the injured are coming back gradually one by one.”
“Tuesday was a great win especially as we were two nil down as well and the win just shows what character this group of lads has got, they just need to start believing.
“I knew that the character was there from the first game of the season at Erith when we were two behind at half time before coming back to 3-2 before we conceded right at the end. It shows the character that they have got!
“We’ve been trying to get players in to fill the holes of the injured and it takes time for them to come in and adjust to how I want to play. It has been a tough ride, but that’s football and you have to get through them and hopefully after Tuesday’s performance, we have now got through that stage!”
Gillingham play-off winning skipper Barry Fuller scored the winning goal for Ashford on Tuesday after signing on loan from Dorking Wanderers and Kedwell had nothing but praise for his loanee.
“We are best pals and to get him in to help us has been amazing and just summed it all up really. What an addition to have, the experience, the knowledge and just to have him around the boys is brilliant – the way he talks and organises them.
“He’s played the last two, we weren’t great at Lancing but he was our best player and was one of our best players on Tuesday so at 40 years old, he’s still got it. He is so fit, he looks after himself – it’s a great addition to have, he’s a leader and he’s a local boy too so it’s an ideal loan move for him.”
