Kent’s Robbie Joseph says he is “delighted to have been given another chance” at Kent, following his return for a second spell at the club.
32-year-old Joseph returned to Kent earlier this month, having impressed head coach Jimmy Adams and captain Rob Key in the nets and warm-up fixtures in pre-season.
The Antigua-born fast bowler was rewarded with a one-year contract at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, having previously plied his trade with Kent between 2005 and 2011, picking up 144 First Class wickets at an average of 31.25, and 47 wickets in limited-overs cricket in that time.
“Kent is my home away from home in England”, Joseph told KSN.
“I started my career here and I’d like to think I’d be able to finish it here as well. I’m really delighted to have been given the chance to have another go at it.”
Having left Kent in 2011, Joseph spent a season playing for Leicestershire in 2012 before being out of the First Class game last year. The seamer feels that that time away from the game has rekindled his passion for it
“I had some time away from the game and played some club cricket in the Surrey League”, he explained. “I just chilled out and tried to get away from the game a little bit. It sort of revived my enthusiasm and my want to be on the professional scene.
“It helped put some perspective into everything as well, so all in all I’m quite pleased that I had time away to recharge, refresh and just go from there.”
Having now officially returned to the club, Joseph is keen to push for a place in both Championship and limited-overs cricket.
“I want to feature in all three forms”, he said.
“If I’m going to do it, I want to do it properly, so I’ll be putting my name forward for selection and giving myself the best chance I possibly can. The rest is up to the people who select the team – if they think I’ve got what it takes to make an impact in the different forms of the game, then so be it. If they don’t, I’ll keep working on it and try and get better so I can feature in all forms.”
Joseph has featured in both of Kent’s opening two games in this year’s County Championship, taking five wickets at an average of 31.40. Joseph is content with his form so far, considering the time he spent away from the game.
“I’m relatively happy”, he said.
“To have been out of the game for such a long time, last year, I’m quite happy to have started the way I’ve started. I’m at a good point where I can try and improve my game week on week.”
