Geraint Jones staked his claim for a recall to the Kent side with a blistering 92 as the combined 2nd XI lost on Thursday.Cricket - County Championship Division Two - Kent v Glamorgan - Canterbury, England - Day 3

Durham gained a measure of revenge for their defeat in the original fixture, in this match arranged to fill the fourth day at Billericay.

Once again, it was the experienced players for Essex & Kent who look most at ease on a new pitch, with Mark Pettini (55) and Geraint Jones (92) responsible for the target of 220.

Having chosen to bat, Essex & Kent lost Fabian Cowdrey to the first ball of the match, followed by Alex Blake two overs later, as tight Durham bowling restricted the home side to 22-2 from the first powerplay.

Kishen Velani (20) helped take the score up to 57 before Pettini and Jones added 71 at better than a run-a-ball.  But, just as Essex & Kent were looking to accelerate, the loss of 6 wickets in 13 overs meant that Jones was unable to maintain the momentum.  However, the Kent wicketkeeper hit 30 from his final 11 deliveries, including 4 immense sixes to take the score up to 220.

This target appeared to be beyond Durham’s reach at 105-6, but this was achieved in the first 22 overs.  Charlie Hartley led the way with 3-29 as Durham were reduced to 47-4 by the end of the 7th over, then debutant Husnan Kazmi and Adam Ball took one further wicket apiece.

Paul Coughlin, who had earlier taken 2-22, and Andy Ireland, who was on the end of Jones’ heroics, conceding 23 from his final over, then came together, with a little help from the fielders.  The two Durham batsmen were given at least 5 lives due to dropped catches as they built momentum, adding an unbeaten 116 from 108 balls.  Coughlin ended with a run-a-ball 72, while Ireland just missed the landmark, taking 55 balls for his 54, as they steered Durham home with 8 balls to spare.
