Kent wicketkeeper Geraint Jones and his Papua New Guinea team-mates narrowly missed out on a place in the T20 World Cup Finals.Geraint PNG team

Playing for the country of his birth, the 37 year old has spent the past couple of weeks playing in the World Cup Qualifiers, culminating in Thursday morning’s Play-off final against Hong Kong.

Papua New Guinea were to bowl first after Hong Kong won the toss and elected to bat, posting 137 for 9 in their 20 overs.

A difficult start to the PNG innings saw Jones come in and number four with the side already in trouble at 19 for 2 after 5 overs and despite scoring a run a ball twenty, Jones couldn’t prevent his side slipping to a 29 run defeat.

It turned out to be a decent tournament for Jones on a personal level, regularly top scoring for Papua New Guinea as they impressed in the tournement over in Abu Dhabi.

Papua New Guinea will now face Scotland on Friday morning to determine who finishes seventh in the tournament after they lost to the Netherlands.

Jones will then return to Kent on Saturday before joining back up with the Papua New Guinea side once again in January as they look to book their place in the 50 over World Cup Finals.

That will see the Kent wicketkeeper join up with his international team-mates for around three weeks in both Australia and New Zealand.
