The Orpington teenager, who attends Whitgift School, reached the Junior Boys’ Doubles semi-finals alongside Ethan Walsh, winning through the first three rounds without dropping a set and then seeing their quarter-final opponents, the third seeds from Germany, withdraw.
It meant they were guaranteed a podium finish and although they fought hard against top seeds Kun Ting Beh & Yew En Koen Pang of Singapore, they were beaten 3-1 (11-4, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4) by opponents who went on to win gold.
Smith also went furthest of the English players in the Junior Boys’ Singles, dropping only one set as he won his group and then beat Lukasz Sokolowski of Poland 4-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6) in the last 64.
