Tom Jackson is back on track this weekend as he makes his debut in the British GT Championship with the HHC Motorsport.
Jackson will be partnered by Luke Williams driving a McLaren 570s in the GT4 class, and for Jackson he is back with a team he knows well.
Speaking to Kent Sports News about being back on track this weekend, Jackson said: “Thrilled to be back out racing for a full season again, and to do it in the British GT championship was something I couldn’t turn down.
“A series known for some stunning looking cars with packed and competitive grids. So would be a great place for myself to get a full year of GT racing under my belt.”
It was a relatively late deal to be part of the British GT grid for 2019, with the deal being completed and announced in March. Jackson tells us how it all came about.
He added: “My first ever racing experience was with the HHC team, back in 2012 in the Ginetta Junior days. In the following years have always been in the same racing scene as them. The deal with HHC was quite an easy and straightforward process.
“Team boss Charlie Kemp gave me a call at the start of the year and laid out all the details and asked if I was interested. The deal on the table was one I couldn’t say no to. And here we are couple days before the first round.”
As mentioned Tom and Luke will be behind the wheel of the McClaren with HHC who are a very well established team in the GT4 class.
“HHC are a very well-known professional team and successful in any championship they enter. So attacking this season with their support behind is a great benefit.”
During test day Jackson got behind the wheel alongside Williams and he learnt a lot about the McLaren and the way it handles.
He said: “First lap I was initially surprised, as I have never driven a turbo charged racing car before – so that was something slightly different to initially absorb.
“After that though, it was just about understanding and trying to master all of the driver aids and the new electronic diff that again I have never encountered before.”
Finally we asked Tom how he was getting on with Luke Williams and whether they are setting any targets for the 2019 season.
“Luke’s a quick driver, so I’m feeling confident with the pairing. We’ve shared a pre-season test day together at Donnington where it ended being both dry and wet in the day. So some great running for us to try the car in mixed conditions and work together as well as the engineers to bring the setup forwards.
“Targets for the season are to get stuck in right from the first lap, would be great to pick up a collection of podiums and a win on the way would be perfect.”
