Tom Jackson is having a fantastic season in the Duo BRDC F4 Championship and the results are backing up the talent that he has.
Tom recently netted the first win of his racing career, and followed that up with a double podium at is home track of Brands Hatch.
Speaking to Kent Sports News, Tom said: “I think my first victory is an achievement that we have been waiting for, for too long.
“We have been pushing hard for this for a while now and finally this year, I really feel that as a driver I am becoming a well-rounded and competitive driver. With the backing of the team and the engineers as well developing me alongside the car, we are starting to become a great whole package.
“The win was overdue and when we got it the emotions were overflowing, my dad was crying and it was a great sense of enjoyment and a bit of pressure had been lifted off my shoulders.”
Tom saying he has become a more rounded driver is backed up by the fact that he went to his home round and backed the win up with two third place finishes, and a top ten finish.
He added: “I think bar the first race weekend where I should have got a podium, I have been on the podium at every single round, and the consistency is there to be in the top three at every race event. If we are not on the podium we need to be looking at why that is.
“The team and I are now front running pace and if we are not in the top three we need to really work out why that is. We have the car set-up right and my driving has taken a step forward especially from the start of last year.
“Now when we get to a circuit we don’t need to make that many changes as we have a great set-up, we tweak minor things, to make me feel comfortable in the seat and give me the confidence to max out the car.”
Tom has been quietly going about his business in the Formula Four championship and is just behind second place in the championship.
“At the moment you have Will Palmer who is the son of Jonathan Palmer who owns all the tracks and Rodrigo Fonseca who is sponsored basically by Mexico, so he has a big push from his side, and Will has all of MSV and his father and his brother.
“Obviously the name Palmer is a great influence in motorsport, I think that might bring a lot of pressure to Will sometimes with the success of his dad and his brother. He obviously copes with it well and is doing his own thing, he is up there and he is up there because he is quick.
“Like you said my name is not lime lighted much but it is now more coming to the forefront, and people are starting to see that I am coming. Going into Brands Hatch I was 35 points behind Rodrigo Fonseca, and I came out with a 13 point deficit.
“To have a huge amount of points taken out of his lead on me, so coming out of Snetterton we will be second. With my name up there as the second British driver, I think I am going to get a bit more publicity. I already get a lot and I try to do my own stuff when I am away from the track. Sponsors like to see that your name is up there, but publicity for them is a great thing, it is just trying to work hard to do that.
“If I become a BRDC Rising star hopefully and I am right up there then my name will escalate and I will really be one of the top young guns out there.”
The next round of the season is at Snetterton where Tom took his maiden win and he is looking to carry on that good form into the upcoming rounds.
He said: “It is all going in the right direction and coming into it from last year finishing 15th in the championship and not doing all the rounds, I didn’t really have the self-confidence believing that I was good.
“As things are going better in the championship, my confidence and self-belief is so high and when you truly believe in yourself and you know that you can do something. It is a psychological advantage, as your mind-set is not negative and if you have a bad result, you are like oh well.
“I had a bad result at Snetterton in race one, I was running third and I got a puncture and finished last. With my positive mind-set, I looked and thought I was running third, where as last year I would have been oh damn, I lost and no points etc. I kept my head up and then what happened next race, I went out and won.
“The confidence that I have got at the moment is riding high and I think that going into the next round with a win under my belt I am looking for great things.”
