Last time out at Croft, Tom Jackson managed to get on the podium in what was a tough weekend for the youngster.
It is one of the longest trips of the season for Tom and his dad and it didn’t get off to the best of starts with some set-up issues as Tom explains.
He said: “Getting on the podium at all is a great achievement in itself, but after the long journey up there and overcoming the problems we had at the weekend with wrong setups in some of the practice sessions.
“To then bounce back and put it P2 in qualifying and then getting into first place in the race however though reluctantly dropping back down to second by an outrageous move that included a substantial impact into the side of me. Nevertheless getting a second place is now my best finishing position, and great points for championship.”
The race also had rain which made it more exciting for the fans and extremely hard to master for the drivers.
He added: “Driving in the wet is a hard concept to perfect even with racing wet tyres. So to do it on road sport tyres is like trying to drive on ice. Having said that though, out of a wet track or a slippery greasy track I would prefer to drive on the greasy track mainly because you can actually see out of the windscreen.
“In the wet, if you’re tucked up behind someone – you cannot see anything! So driving in the rain on these tyres is ridiculous there’s barely any grip and then when the track Is sunk by waves of water, the car just simply aquaplanes everywhere.”
The championship is now on its mid-season break but Tom is going to be keeping himself busy in the next few weeks.
He said: “Between now and the next round at Snetterton, I am not going to be doing any track days or test days in preparation for the race. So in this six week gap I’ll be going over last year’s on-board footage, taking notes of improvement and also going over the data as well because you can then clearly see what I was exactly doing wrong or right.
“The summer break in the case of racing is a hindrance because it’s quite a long break until your next in the car, however though the break does give you time to relax and also get everything well prepared, and search and contact possible sponsors.
“However though I am going to work during the day to try and get enough money to get my first car and drivers licence because as soon as I have a licence I can then become a racing driving instructor, and then tutor people at tracks and earn money that way which would be much more exciting and also could benefit me in learning how different types of cars react to different conditions at tracks. So there are positives and negatives to the break, but mainly gives my dad a break.”
