Former Gillingham midfielder Danny Jackman is backing the side to go on and win League Two after a great start to the season.
The 30 year old left Priestfield on Monday to sign a deal with Conference Premier side Kidderminster Harriers after two spells with The Gills that took in five years.
Despite leaving the club he says he loves, Jackman told KSN how he is backing the squad Martin Allen has assembled to go on and top the league come the end of the season:
“There’s a good bunch of lads there and they want to work hard, they want to do well and with the fans backing the team they will be right up there come the end of the season.”
“Cody (McDonald) coming back was massive for them and they’ve got a hell of a squad for the league they are in.”
“I have no doubt they have the capability to go on and not only get promoted, but to win the league. It’s all about stringing some results together, but the lads are more than capable of doing that.”
Having left Priestfield, Jackman told KSN how he will always regard The Gills as “his club” and will always keep an eye on what’s going on back in Kent from his home in Worcestershire:
“To spend five years at the club, I was very lucky and Gillingham will always be my club. I’ve got a lot of friends at and around the club and it will be a place I’ll always hold close to my heart.”
“Because of the financial climate, it’s quite rare to spend a long time with one club and you are lucky to get a one year deal now, so I have always been lucky and the Chairman has always been fantastic with me.”
“I’m just gutted I couldn’t repay their faith in me with promotion, but I’m sure they’ll get that anyway.”
When any player leaves a club, they always reflect on what has been the highlight of their time there. Jackman is no different having had two spells at Priestfield, admitting it was special to play for the fans:
“It’s hard to pinpoint a moment as I’ve had so many enjoyable moments at the club. When I re-signed, the reception I got was second to none and that was quite emotional stuff to be welcomed back like that.”
“The Gills fans have always been fantastic and playing on a Saturday, kicking towards the Rainham End gave me a massive buzz.”
“The fans always got behind us no matter what was happening on the pitch, so it’s been an honour to have played for the club.”
Jackman’s time at Kidderminster Harriers got off to the perfect start as they beat AFC Telford 1-0 with the former Gills midfielder playing 87 minutes.
