I am writing this quick column on the way back from Crewe. We have a four hour journey ahead of us. The free fish and chips from the coach makes it a little bit more bearable.
It’s another incredibly frustrating result for Gillingham. But one that was very much expected. Especially after we went 1-0 down, because we’ve shown on so many occasions that we’re incapable of coming from behind to win under Neil Harris.
I’m to get Harris out the way early on. He’s a hot topic of discussion in the Gillingham fan base and rightly so. His football isn’t easy on the eye but he does have a fair proven track record. I’m just not sure this club is for him anymore.
I received a lot of stick on social media a week or two ago for questioning why he turns every game into a battle. Why he wants to approach matches, particularly away matches, with a negative mindset from the off.
I think our squad is good enough to go into games like Colchester at home, like Doncaster away, expecting to win. That’s not to say the games won’t be difficult, but we’re a good squad of players that should be competing at the top end of the league.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to go to a game and enjoy watching your team’s play style. I think sometimes fans are brainwashed into thinking the result is everything. The way we have been performing isn’t sustainable and that’s showing now.
That said, sometimes it’s easy to blame a poor result on the manager. Sure, ultimately they take the blame and that’s the bottom line. But it would’ve been hard to for the first 75 minutes against Crewe. We created plenty, but did everything but put the ball in the net.
George Lapslie put an effort straight at Harvey Davies and Mcauley Bonne missed an open goal. I think Bonne has done well since he’s come in, often playing up front on his own, but he needs to find his scoring boots. Like, now. One goal so far is not good enough, especially when you think about the chances he’s missed.
The lack of end product is hugely frustrating. Several players are to blame for that. I don’t think the way we’ve been setting up has helped the team too much on that front but Harris can’t put the ball in the net for them. He probably wishes he could.
We’re getting better at getting the midfielders to step closer to the defenders to collect the ball. Sometimes play is slow, movement is often bad. But we’re getting there on that front.
I think these next bunch of fixtures will tell us a lot. I said that pre-Mansfield and that’s not changed after picking up one point from the first two games of that block. MK Dons promises to be interesting at the weekend.
