There was some good news for Charlton ahead of kick-off, Neil Etheridge had penned a permanent deal with the Addicks earlier in the day.
Wigan striker, Grant Holt, suffered a serious knee injury at Rotherham on Sunday. Holt is currently on loan with Chris Powell’s Huddersfield and the injury will rule him out for nine months. The Latics may now reconsider their decision to allow Andy Delort to go out on loan.
Damien Matthew drove Bob Peeters’ Porsche to the ground, the head coach will be doing some scouting.
Peeters had his plans disrupted when Oguchi Onyewu pulled a hamstring during the warm-up.
Peeters brought in Joe Gomez, with Terrell Thomas replacing him on the bench.
The first reverse fixture of the season saw Ipswich complete the double over the South Londoners.
Peeters started off with a back-four, featuring Gomez on the left, but switched to 3-5-2 midway through the first half, Gomez was on the right, Tal Ben Haim on the middle and Andre Bikey on the left.
David McGoldrick turned out to be Charlton’s tormentor-in-chief, striking both posts from free-kicks, as well as hitting the bar.
The Addicks fell behind to a corner just after the half-hour mark, when centre back, Tommy Smith fired home from close range, following a miscued effort from Daryl Murphy.
Murphy added the second after 61 minutes, heading home after McGoldrick had hit the bar.
McGoldrick finally got his name on the scoresheet in the last minute, when he dinked the ball over Etheridge.
Johann Gudmundsson was at the heart of Charlton’s best moments. Though the visitors showed some neat approach play, they failed to put Bartosz Bialkowski under consistent pressure.
The visitors had their best moments when Gudmundsson had a shot headed off the line by Christophe Berra in the first half, after George Tucudean had his shot blocked.
Johnnie Jackson headed just over from a Tucudean cross early in the second period, before Gudmunndsson drew a good save from the keeper.
So the Addicks finish the year on a run of just two wins in their last fourteen games. They need to start winning soon if they are to avoid looking nervously over their shoulder.
Referee Chris Kavanagh deserves a mention. Just 28-years-old and in his first season on the League list, the Manchester whistler had a fine game.
