A hat-trick during a man of the match performance from forward Robbie Brown saw the Invicta Dynamos continue their perfect start to the 2011/12 season with an 8-2 win over the Streatham Redskins in Gillingham on Sunday.
A feisty start to the game saw Redskins’ veteran Warren Rost dispatched from the tie early on as he tussled with Daniel Fudger away from the puck. Rost speared the grinder behind the play before falling to the ice when Fudger retaliated and receiving the majority of the blows.
When play restarted it then took the hosts until five minutes from the break to net the opener as a long drive from the blue line by Jack Tarczycki crept inside the near post of Stefan Nubert’s goal to make it 1-0 on the powerplay.
Three more would quickly follow though as the hosts then built on their momentum to move out of sight. Corey Watkins swept in from the right side to double the Dynamos’ advantage, Robbie Brown stabbed in from close range to make it 3-0 following good work by Andy Smith and, shorthanded, Justin Noble added a fourth as he robbed the Streatham back line before going through all alone and beating the goalie.
Before the break Grant Baxter’s mistimed hit on Russell Stevens then saw him ejected from the tie with a match penalty for checking from behind.
The second frame saw another slow start as the Dynamos killed off numerous penalties but, four minutes from time, the visitors then pulled a goal back with Michael Ranby finding the five-hole at point blank range to make it 4-1.
His strike only served to reignite the home side who then replied with two more ahead of the buzzer. Nicky Lewis’ pass across the crease left Michael Timms with a simple finish at the back stick before Robbie Brown forced the Streatham rear guard into a mistake to steal possession, race through and the convert beyond Stefan Nubert for the 6-1 lead.
In the final period the hosts continued to look dangerous and Canadian Ryan Ellis swiftly made it 7-1 as he rifled in beyond the goalie from wide right to add his name to the goal sheet. Midway through it was then 8-1 as Robbie Brown burst through on a 5-on-3 shorthanded breakaway and calmly lifted over the reach of Stefan Nubert for his third of the night and his first hat-trick in Dynamos’ colours.
The visitors would claim the last strike of the evening however when Liam Rasmussen slotted in on the rebound but it was too little too late for the South London side who slumped to an 8-2 road defeat.
So it was a comfortable margin of victory for the Dynamos who overpowered a shortbenched Streatham outfit to maintain their 100% record with six league points from a possible six.
Man of the match on the night was hat-trick hero Robbie Brown for the hosts whilst Chris Rasmussen took it for the Redksins. From here the Dynamos now prefer for a sterner test as next Sunday sees the team travel to Chelmsford to face the 2010/11 playoff champions – the Chieftains – with faceoff at 6.30pm.
