The Invicta Dynamos pulled off the most remarkable comeback to beat Wightlink Raiders 6-4 on Sunday night having trailed 4-0.
With all the will in the world, even the most die hard Dynamos fan came away from the Silver Blades Ice Bowl hardly believing what they had just seen after Kevin Parrish’s side showed true character against the league leaders.
For the first thirty minutes of the game, it was almost one way traffic and not the way the home support had thought they’d gone to watch.
Fans had flocked to Gillingham to see the top of the table clash and they weren’t to be denied a cracking evening’s entertainment as the game swayed one way and then the other.
The Dynamos looked like a side that hadn’t even met one another for the opening half an hour as the visitors opened up a four goal lead.
It was 2-0 by the end of the first period as the Dynamos failed to click into gear and when the fourth goal went in just after the half hour mark, most fans believed they could be about to witness one hell of a drubbing.
However, the Dynamos players hadn’t read the script and by the end of the scond period they had a lifeline.
With Callum Fowler back on the ice after serving a ten minute misconduct penalty, the Dynamos got themselves a goal back in the 32nd minute with Andy Smith teeing Fowler up at the back post.
Shortly after Fowler hit the post as the Dynamos went in search for a second, but they didn’t have to wait too much longer as Fowler returned the favour for Smith to make it 4-2.
It could have been even better if Juraj Huska’s strike had gone in, but he too hit the post as the Dynamos ended the period strongly.
There was still time for late drama though with both benches pouring onto the ice as the buzzer sounded with Arran Strawson in the thick of the action and the punches flew.
With fifteen minutes break to reflect on what could be a season defining period for the Dynamos, the home side came out with all guns blazing for the final period.
As the crowd started to believe they could be about to witness something special, the Dynamos clawed another goal back in the 45th minute as Smith set Shaun Wild up to make it 4-3.
That joy turned to elation in the 53rd minute as the Dynamos drew level with the home side making the most of another powerplay to score with Fowler grabbing his second of the night after great work from Huska and Wild.
If that wasn’t enough and with the clock ticking down, there was still time for late drama as the Dynamos took the lead against the run of play and with a man down.
As Arran Strawson sat in the box after picking up a two minute penalty for slashing, the Dynamos scored yet again with Fowler grabbing his hat-trick as they broke from one end to the other.
It was man of the match Andy Smith that set him up and in the process registered his 900th point for the Dynamos.
Once again, there was to be even further drama as Wightlink pulled their netminder to pile on the pressure, but with just 42 seconds left on the clock, the puck bounced nicely for Marek Nahlik who raced clear and slammed it home into an empty net for 6-4.
Cue wild celebrations at the end as the Dynamos fans rejoiced at the fact that the side had made it a four point weekend and now sit just two points behind their opponents with a game in hand.
They now face just the one game next weekend with Milton Keynes Thunder coming to Gillingham on Sunday evening with face off at 5:15pm.
