The Invicta Dynamos maintained their fine league form with a 6-2 win over Solent Devils on Sunday night.
Kevin Parrish’s side went into the game fresh from having beaten London Raiders 7-2 in the South East Trophy the night before, but missing all three Wootton brother and Grant Baxter.
It was to prove to be a tricky game for the Dynamos to overcome with a Solent side determined to come to Gillingham and shut up shop.
Indeed their tactics worked perfectly in the first period, going in 0-0 at the break as the Dynamos were forced to fire from distance against a Devils defence that left few gaps at the back.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 27th minute as Steve Osman fired the puck across the crease, clipping Devils defenceman Ben Lock leaving Christian Cole flat footed.
Parity was restored seven minutes later though as Andrew Magee’s strike clipped Ondrej Zosiak’s skate leaving Damien King with no chance.
Sensing they needed to up a gear, the Dynamos were back in front little over a minute later as Eriks Ozollapa sent man of the match Jacob Ranson free down the right and with his long locks flowing behind him, he buried the puck past Cole.
At 2-1 going into the final period, the game was still up for grabs and the Dynamos made sure it was going to be two points for them as six minutes into the final twenty Steve Osman tucked the puck home after good work from captain Nicky Lewis.
In the 52nd minute it was all but over as a contest as the Dynamos raced into a 4-1 lead with Arran Strawson sending Ozollapa free and the Latvian hammered home at the second attempt.
Despite losing Stephen Gossett to a ten minute misconduct penalty, the Devils weren’t prepared to just roll over and on 57 minutes they pegged it back to 4-2 when Magee roofed into the net at the back post.
Any lingering hopes of a late comeback were put to bed in the dying seconds with the Dynamos scoring goal numbers five and six.
The fifth came with 44 seconds left on the clock as Ozollapa and Callum Fowler exchanged passes with the latter applying the final touch and the sixth goal came with only 23 seconds left in the game as Ranson turned provider for Ozollapa who bundled home depsite losing his footing.
In the end a 6-2 scoreline was probably about right for a Dynamos side that didn’t quite hit top gear, but will be hoping they have left something in the tank for next weekend.
They head to the Isle of Wight on Saturday evening to take on a resolute Raiders side before returning to Gillingham on Sunday night to face league leaders Chelmsford Chieftains in a game that may ultimately decide where the league title goes.
