The Invicta Dynamos cemented second place in the league with a comfortable 6-2 win over London Raiders on Sunday night.
Going into the game the Dynamos were keen to put Saturday evening’s 6-3 loss to Wightlink Raiders swiftly behind them and much of the talk was about the return of Chris “Disco” Douglas.
However, by the end of the night there was plenty of other talking points for the Dynamos fans to go away and discuss.
It was an even start to the game with the Dynamos once again having to do without both Mark Lee and Frankie Harvey so Mark McGill was once again handed the netminder role.
McGill was the first to pull the puck from the net with less than three minutes on the clock as Jakub Kostelansky fired home leaving the Dynamos netminder with no chance.
The home side fought back well through and took full advantage of a powerplay less than two minutes later to level with Arran Strawson firing home a thunderbolt from the blue line and Michal Oravec taking the slightest of deflections leaving Douglas on his backside.
Shots rained in at both ends throughout the rest of the period, but neither McGill or Douglas were to be beaten with fans of both persuasion happy at the break.
The second period proved to be the one that caused the most talking points with both netminders kept busy, but the home side went in front just before the half hour mark when Nicky Lewis turned the puck home after some great work by Juraj Huska.
Less than five minutes later and Huska claimed he’d scored, with Douglas believing he’d clawed the puck from the line. Play continued for some ninety seconds and on the next break in play, the two officials consulted and awarded the goal to the Dynamos.
The home fans celebrated whilst the travelling support were left stunned by the decision along with the Raiders side who then had to deal with a late Dynamos barrage.
With Elliott Dewey off the ice for hooking and the Dynamos a man down, they stunned the visiting side with two shorthanded goals.
The first went to Callum Fowler as he turned Douglas this way and that before burying the puck and less than a minute later Lewis made it 5-1 as he pulled off his “Ronaldo” and fired home off the post.
Four minutes into the final period and the game got lively as Jack Lee took a hit on the boards leaving the youngster stunned and team-mate Grant Baxter steamed in to go toe to toe with Ross Wilkinson. After a bit of handbags the pair were sent from the ice to cool down.
Just into the 50th minute and the Raiders pegged it back to 5-2 as Jacob Ranson tucked the puck in after McGill saved well from Kostelansky.
Chances came and went at both ends with the clock running down and it seemed as though it would end 5-2 until the very last second of the game.
The Raiders were penalised for knocking their goal off the line and from the resulting penalty shot Huska danced down the ice and led Douglas a merry dance before roofing into the net much to the delight of the home support.
So it ended 6-2 and secured second spot in the league for a Dynamos side that must now play out the next two Sundays against Streatham Redskins, first away and then at home for their remaining league fixtures.
Their attention will then switch to the NIHL Southern Cup Final against Chelmsford Chieftains at the end of the month and then on to the play-offs.
