The Invicta Dynamos ground out a much needed win against MK Thunder on Sunday night to make it a four point weekend.
Not so fresh after getting back from Cardiff at 3am with a victory under their belts, the Dynamos went into the game against Milton Keynes knowing they were in for a battle and would have to do it the hard way.
Kevin Parrish’s side took to the ice with just fourteen players as Andy Smith sat out the game with concussion after a late hit the night before, Arran Strawson was suspended and both Grant Baxter and Charlie Phillips were missing through injury.
With so few players to call from and Mark Lee in goal with Chris Douglas rested, the Dynamos knew it wasn’t going to be an easy night and that’s how it proved to be.
The first period passed almost without incident as both sides looked to hit each other on the counter with both netminders in fine form, Lee and Damien King pulling off great saves to keep it goalless at the break.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 23rd minute of the game with both Billy Phillips and Juraj Huska in the box for penalties as Milton Keynes broke down the ice and Jamie Randall slotted the puck past Lee off the underside of the bar.
Inspired going a goal down, the game got heated as the Dynamos looked to up the tempo and they finally drew level in the 31st minute with Callum Fowler scoring through the legs of King who was largely unsighted.
Going into the final period the Dynamos knew they would need lady luck to go their way as King showed his class to keep them from pulling ahead time after time, with the fans growing ever more nervous that it might be just one of those games.
Their fears were unfounded though as the Dynamos made it 2-1 in the 50th minute when Adam McNicoll danced down the ice, twisting and turning as he went before clipping the puck past King and into the back of the net.
Then followed ten minutes of end to end ice hockey that failed to produce a goal, but had fans sitting on the edge of their seats with both teams intent on adding to their tally.
The final buzzer was greeted by a sigh of relief and cheers from the home support as the Dynamos made it a double winning weekend lifting them up to third place in the NIHL South table.
Next weekend will be a tough task for the Dynamos as they head to Bracknell Bees in the English Challenge Cup on Saturday evening before returning to Gillingham on Sunday night to take on the Guildford Flames in the same competition.
