The Invicta Dynamos made it the perfect weekend with victory over Swindon Wildcats after just nine seconds of overtime.
Kevin Parrish’s side followed up Saturday night’s 4-1 win over Cardiff Fire in Wales with the triumph over one of the league favourites in front of a vociferous Gillingham crowd.
However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Dynamos though as they trailed 2-1 in the final period.
The night started with the Dynamos taking to the ice with a full roster in which to choose from and confidence high following the win the night before, but the players could have been excused for being a little tired after an early hours return on Sunday morning.
With the visitors boasting an impressive and physical looking line up, some fans feared the worst, but the Dynamos were on the front foot from the off.
John Dibble was given the netminder duties for the first time this season and was kept busy in the opening twenty minutes, but it was the Dynamos that took the lead in the 13th minute when import Ondrej Zosiak fired home from just inside the blue line.
The Wildcats showed their class though and were level just seconds before the break when Sam Zajac roofed the puck beyond the stranded Dibble.
The second period was much like the first, with fast, end to end ice hockey for the fans to enjoy, but it was the handful of Swindon fans that were celebrating in the 36th minute as the Dynamos failed to clear their lines and Sam Bullas tucked home.
At 2-1 going into the final frame, it was all to play for and the Dynamos threw everything they had at the Wildcats and it paid off in the 55th minute as Zosiak sent Callum Fowler free and the diminuitive forward fired home at the second time of asking.
Despite both teams going for a winner in normal time, it wasn’t to be and the fans were to be treated for their first taste of overtime this season.
With just three players for each team allowed out on the ice (along with the netminder), space was always going to be an issue and Parrish sent out Zosiak, Fowler and captain Bobby Chamberlain for the face off.
The Dynamos won said face off and Chamberlain took the puck into his own half, darted down the left and beat all in front of him before slotting home to the delight oh his team-mates and supporters alike.
That goal ensured the Dynamos take all four points from the weekend, a weekend that will live long in the memory for those in attendance.
They now have this week to prepare for just the one fixture next weekend, away to London Raiders in the NIHL Cup next Saturday night.
Their next home fixture is ironically against London Raiders in the NIHL Cup again on Sunday 1st October with face off at 5:15pm.
