The Invicta Dynamos are still in the title hunt after an epic 3-2 victory over league leaders Chelmsford Chieftains on Sunday night.
Kevin Parrish’s side knew nothing but a win would do if they were to keep their title dreams alive and then did it in style in front of the biggest crowd to have packed into the Silver Blades in Gillingham for years.
With face off delayed by ten minutes to get the packed crowd into the rink, the atmosphere was electric ahead of the clash between the two best sides in the NIHL South.
Those that came for the first time weren’t to be disappointed and even though the game was goalless after the first period, there was still plenty of action.
Both sides played some flowing ice hockey with players prepared to go toe to toe for their team as it was evident that no quarter was to be given to their opponents.
The game was to come alive three minutes into the second period as Darren Brown managed to squeeze the puck beyond Dynamos netminder Chris Douglas.
However, that only served to inpsire the Dynamos as they were to draw level nine minutes later as unlikely hero Shaun Wild fired home from the blue line.
With the game set up perfectly going into the final period and the crowd demanding more action, they weren’t to be denied as the Dynamos took the lead for the first time in the 46th minute when import Juraj Huska went on a fine solo run before slotting home.
Just two minutes later and it was 3-1 to the Dynamos when some great unselfish play from Andy Smith teed up Danny Hammond to tuck the puck into the net.
The game was to turn on its’ head though on 51 minutes as Dynamos netminder Chris Douglas went down with what turned out to be a dislocated shoulder.
Having left the ice for a few minutes, in which time Ryan Giles was involved in a fight, Douglas returned to try again, but less than thirty seconds after returning he conceded with Ross Brears firing home.
With his shoulder having gone again, a forelorn Douglas was to leave the ice for the final time leaving Davey Jackson to face the final seven entertaining minutes.
Both sides pushed forward and it must have seemed like the longest seven minutes for Dynamos fans and even with a timeout in the last minute, Chelmsford couldn’t find the all important equaliser and the two vital points were kept by the home side.
The victory sees the Dynamos pull to within three points of Chelmsford at the top of the table and next weekend they head to Cardiff NIHL Devils on Saturday night before returning to Gillingham on Sunday evening to face Milton Keynes Thunder for two vital league games.
