The Invicta Dynamos ended their league campaign in style with a comfortable 10-2 win over Bracknell Hornets on Sunday.
Kevin Parrish’s side went into the game on the back of the 7-4 loss to the Wightlink Raiders the night before and in the knowledge that they would no longer be likely to secure second place in the NIHL South league.
That didn’t deter them though as they came out easy winners, although they didn’t have it all their own way.
Bracknell started the game the stronger of the two sides with the Dynamos still reeling at the news that defenceman Ryan Giles had broken his wrist on the Isle of Wight, whilst Arran Strawson missed out with damaged ribs.
With Shaun Yardley and Davey Jackson also missing through injury, that meant Matt Daubney was handed the netminder duties for the first time, whilst Danny Terry was also given his first start.
The game was just two minutes old when Daubney had to pick the puck out the back of the net as Daniel Hughes fired past him.
A massive scrap on seven minutes certainly got the home crowd going with Juraj Huska, Anthony Leone and Shaun Wild all picking up penalties for their part in proceedings.
With so many players sat in the box, it came as no surprise that the Dynamos conceded again on ten minutes with Ryan Handisides doubling the visitor’s advantage.
Going two goals down only served to inspire the Dynamos as they roared back into a 3-2 lead by the end of the period with Marek Nahlik, Danny Hammond and Andy Smith all getting their names on the scoresheet.
With the game still in the balance, the Dynamos stepped up another gear in the second period with Callum Fowler, Nicky Lewis and Smith all scoring by the 28th minute to make it 6-2 to the home side.
Sensing the game was now betond doubt, Parrish brought netminder Chris Douglas back into the action, some six weeks after dislocating his shoulder.
It proved to be a masterstroke as the Dynamos were to go on and score four unanswered goals in the final period as they once again showed their dominance.
Danny Hammond make it 7-2 in the 42nd minute and from then on in it was plain sailing with Fowler, Chris Cooke and Nahlik all scoring before the end.
With the buzzer calling time on the league campaign, it became clear that the Dynamos would have to settle for third in the league with Wightlink Raiders comfortably beating MK Thunder 15-4 to take second spot.
Now the focus will shift to the Dynamos as they enjoy a rare weekend off before returning to action away to Cardiff NIHL Devils on Saturday 5th April before the much awaited second leg of the tie at the Silver Blades Ice Bowl in Gillingham 24 hours later.
