Central Park in Sittingbourne will be “Probably The Best Track In The World” on Monday when Kent Speedway plays host to a touring side from Denmark!
Hoping to bring home the bacon in an International Club Challenge match versus the Kent SLYDE Kings will be Team Fritte Cup – a septet of some of the brightest young talents from one of world Speedway’s kingpin nations.
Denmark were World Under 21 champions in 2010 and 2014 and are renowned for their youth policy with youngsters starting out even earlier than their teens on 80cc machines.
The Fritte Cup was established six years ago as a series for riders in the Under 23 bracket and in 2014 there was a prize fund of 100,000 Krona for the five meeting series – courtesy of main sponsors R. Frimodt Pedersen, David Super-Light and Kjaergaard.
The winner of that 2014 competition Patrick Bjerregaard will be the star man in the Team Fritte Cup in their tour the select side are undertaking (which sees all seven riders racing here in the UK for a first time) with matches against the King’s Lynn Young Stars on Friday, against Mildenhall Fen Tigers on Sunday and then taking of the Kent SLYDE Kings on Monday (13/7 6.30pm start time).
Bjerregaard rides for top Danish side Vojens and a team mate of his from that Danish Speedway League club in the Fritte Cup select side is Peter Karger. Peter who is 21 years of age is the son of former World Finalist and twice a World Team Cup winner with Denmark, Brian Karger.
Another second generation rider in the TFC side is Jason Jørgensen –the son of former Speedway Grand Prix rider John Jørgensen: a twice World Finalist and also a World Team Cup winner with Denmark. At 17 years of age Jason is the youngest member of the touring squad. Two riders from the Esberg club are Emil Engstrøm and Mark Frimodt Pedersen.
Completing the line up for the Scandinavian visitors will be the very promising 21 year old Jacob Bukhave and from the Slangerup club, Simon Selch.
Three times World Speedway champion Erik Gundersen has been involved with the Fritte Cup in his homeland since its inception said: “We try to prepare the young talents for their further development in the sport, with a view that they are the next generation to battle for gold medals for Denmark.”
The International Challenge is on Monday 13th. July at Central Park Stadium, Sittingbourne – tapes up at 6.30pm.
