Hythe Town 2-1 Sittingbourne

Hythe Town collected their first home points of the season with a deserved 2-1 win over Sittingbourne at Reachfields on Tuesday night.

Goals from Liam Smith and Frannie Collin put Town in control before Kane Rowland registered for the Brickies in this Isthmian South-East clash.

Hythe dominated the first half and midfielder Darren Oldaker, who was super throughout, saw his ball converted by defender Liam Smith who tapped home from close range on 21 minutes.

Sittingbourne came close to levelling almost immediately when Johan Caney-Bryan met Toby Bancroft’s free kick but the striker’s header bounced out off the post.

The Cannons extended their advantage just before the half hour when Oldaker’s defence-splitting pass released Collin who kept his composure to double Hythe’s lead with his fourth goal of the season.

Eli Benoit thought he had made it 3-0 when he headed past Sittingbourne’s Harry Brooks but Oldaker’s corner was adjudged to have gone out before entering the box.

Sittingbourne were holding on and were it not for Brooks it could have been game over before the break, the Brickies goalkeeper denying Oldaker with a superb one-handed save.

The second period was a slow burner with Town sub Jordan Sarfo the first to finally register an effort when his shot fired just wide of Brooks’ upright on 70 minutes.

The Brickies then handed themselves a lifeline when sub Thomas Loynes latched on to Brooks’ long ball and released Rowland who sent a bullet of a strike past William Godman.

Hythe responded well to the visitors pressure and Oldaker nearly sealed the points when, after a mazy run past three Brickies defeners, his deflected shot was well saved by the impressive Brooks.

From the resulting corner Benoit volleyed over as the home fans were beginning to worry these misses would cost Hythe the win.

However Sittingbourne mustered only one real chance to level when Loynes, who did very well in his 30 min cameo, met fellow sub Yao Christophe Aziamale’s cross but volleyed wide to ensure the points went to the hosts.
