Hythe beat bottom side in a workmanlike performance & in doing so rose to 4th in the table. Godalming came to Hythe rock bottom & had nothing to lose & proved a stubborn side to break down.
The game started with Hythe starting the quicker as in the 4th minute Jerald Aboagye on the right wing crossed to the far post where Jay May was but under pressure his shot went past the post.
Godalming had their first chance in the 10th minute when William Afambe 10 yards out latched onto a loose ball & saw his shot cleared off the line by Aboagye & then a minute later a free kick wide on the right side was hit into the area by Darren Wheeler where Chris Wales out jumped the defence but headed over the bar.
In the 21st minute Dean Grant outmuscled Chris Musgrove & ran into the area before seeing his curling shot pushed away by Oneal Garnes.
The game for 18 minutes went a bit stale as both sides were guilty of giving the ball away. In the 39th minute a cross into the edge of the area was controlled by May & he twisted & shot but Garnes saved it & a minute later a guilt edged chance came when Aboagye on the right saw his low cross come to Frankie Sawyer but just as he was about to shoot he slipped & the chance had gone.
Hythe were now getting into their stride & right on half time they opened the scoring when a cross into the area was headed goal wards by Craig Cloke but came back of the post but straight to Ben Wilson who from 10 yards smashed it for his first goal of the season.
The second half was only two minutes old when Hythe doubled their lead when Aboagye running down the right flank got to the by-line & his low cross eventually found May who from 6 yards smashed in.
Godalming were stunned but they belied their position in the table & kept going but without causing Joe Mant to make many saves. In the 50th minute Sean Masod tried his luck from 20 yards but it went high & wide.
A minute later & it could have been game over when Grant latched onto a long ball went into the area but his shot from 15 yards went past the far post.
Two minutes later a free kick into the Godalming area was half cleared to Sam Adams whose 20 yard shot was saved by Garnes. Two minutes later & Godalming had a glorious chance to score & maybe cause a few nerves in the home team when Afambe crossed into the area & Steven Brown 6 yards out flicked his header wide.
In the 73rd minute Wheeler’s cross into the area found Afambe but his weak header was easily saved by Mant. Hythe had the last three half chances of the game when in the 83rd minute Kieron Campbell 40 yards out went on a run beating two defenders before from 20 yards shooting wide then in the 88th minute Wilson flicked on for Kenny Pogue who from an angle 15 yards out shot past the far post.
The final whistle went & the Hythe contingent would go home happy whilst Godalming would have another unhappy Saturday night.
