Welling United are back on the road again this weekend with a trip to Hyde in Greater Manchester.
The two clubs couldn’t have had more differing fortunes on Tuesday night. Welling enjoyed a scintillating 5-2 victory over Forest Green Rovers whilst Hyde stumbled to a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to struggling Woking.
Having lost seven and drawn two of their opening nine games, Hyde found themselves rooted at the foot of the table. Those looking for form clues may look at Forest Green’s opening day 8-0 victory over Hyde and expect Welling to have an easy time however, for the first time this season, the Welling management will have to ensure no complacency creeps in.
Tom Collins may be one of the Hyde players to watch. He scored his fourth goal in the first eight games when his team gave Kidderminster Harriers a tough time last Saturday, a game in which many observers believed them to be unlucky to return home empty handed.
One disappointment in Welling’s win on Tuesday was the injury to Doug Bergqvist. Should he not recover, Wings’ manager Jamie Day will hope that Blaine Hudson is ready to return after being sidelined for the last two matches.
Harry Beautyman will again miss out but Callum Webb has returned to fitness and came on as a substitute for his first Welling league appearance late in the game on Tuesday. His recovery gives Day more options in midfield.
Lee Butcher, Welling’s goalkeeper, made some important saves on Tuesday and although he was only brought in for a month to cover injury to Sam Mott initially, his form convinced Day to offer him a contract for the whole season. As a result, Mott, who wanted first team football, left the club this week to join East Thurrock United.
