In his first interview with KSN, Gillingham defender Remeao Hutton has been telling us about his start in football, the role that Jonny Williams had in bringing him to Kent, and his unlikely friendship with Colombian winger Jorge Hurtado.
Growing up in the West Midlands and being at Walsall until the age of 15, Hutton is now the only one of his “class” playing professional football. “I guess it’s an achievement, I think!” he admitted adding, “I guess we were at that age of fifteen and sixteen where you find “other things” to interest you and it is hard and it is about how badly you want it (to succeed in the game).
“Do you go one way, or do you go another? It is the difference between getting a job and starting to earn a bit of money or going to the gym more, doing extra footballing stuff like that. That was always my way
“I hadn’t played at Priestfield before I signed, I was on the bench early on last season and it was always somewhere that I wanted to play as I hadn’t actually played here, and when the opportunity came to play here, I took it with both hands.”
“When I got the call, I spoke to Jonny (Williams), and he told me what a good club it is to play for. I had actually spoken to him at the start of the season when I did not have a club and he said to me to come down, but I did not get any contact. When I did eventually get the call in January, he was the first one I called.”
Hutton who has yet to enjoy a promotion in his short career admitted, “It’s frustrating as we know how close we are especially after the games here against Stockport, Wrexham and last week against Barrow, but we’re a tight group in the dressing room.
“I haven’t seen many groups like this one that get along like we do! I think it shows how close and tight we are when we face the top sides, we just need something! It is frustrating as there is something missing and if we can find that in the summer, then next season, if not still this season, we will do it!”
During his brief stay at Priestfield, Hutton became friends with Colombian winger Jorge Hurtado, and the two have kept in touch. Hutton gave us an update on the winger’s recovery. “I think he’s back training now,” he said.
“It is only light stuff but the operation he had in Spain was a success, so hopefully. I know everyone would love him to come back even though he could not speak a lot of English, he was a big character in the dressing room! I do not know how he did it, he was always dancing around but when he came on the pitch you could see that he plays with a certain amount of that freedom.”
“Hopefully he will come back and by then I may have learned a bit more Spanish, and be able to tell him to get in the box.” Hutton joked
