After a poor result, many clubs want a chance to get back on track as quickly as possible.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Monday night’s game between Hungerford Town and Welling United will be the opportunity that both clubs will want.

At Park View Road on Saturday, Welling suffered the gut wrenching feeling of conceding a crucial late goal for the umpteenth time this season. Whether it is a matter of fitness or an inability to maintain concentration for ninety minutes is unknown, but Head Coach Jamie Day acknowledged afterwards that this is a matter that needs to be addressed rapidly.

Their predicament is not eased by the fact that out of their four centre halves, three will be absent injured whist one has just had a loan spell extended.

Sean Francis will be out for another week following his foot injury at Wealdstone whilst neither Rickie Hayles nor Dean Leacock were able to finish Saturday’s game against Ebbsfleet United.

Immediately after the game, Day admitted that he did not know whether Welling would be able to recall George Allen from his loan spell at Bishop’s Stortford but whatever the situation, he did not expect a relaxing day on Sunday. “We’ll have to try and bring someone in. Whether it’s a young lad from Charlton, Millwall or wherever, we’ll have to try and sign someone.

“I don’t know what the budget is. Hopefully it’s not totally max’d out. We’re going to have to call in a few contacts and see if we can get someone in, if not two. We’re going to have to work out what we can or cannot do, and make decisions from there.”

Hosts, Hungerford Town were also on the end of a disappointment on Saturday, crashing to a 5-0 defeat at high flying St. Albans City.

It is their first ever season at this level in their 130 year history and have taken to it pretty well, currently comfortable in mid table.

At home, they have won two, drawn two and lost three however the last of those victories was as long ago as August Bank Holiday Monday. Since then they have drawn 3-3 with Gosport and lost 3-1 to Hampton and Richmond Borough and 1-0 to Poole Town. In between those games, they have also suffered an F.A. Cup home defeat, 4-1 to Ryman Premier high flyers Leiston.

Another player, Mason Walsh made his Welling debut on Saturday, coming on as a second half substitute. Day said “He’s done well in training, We’ve done our homework on him. He was at Bournemouth for a bit and he’s done well in loan spells. It probably hasn’t quite panned out as well as he wanted to in the last year or two.

“Now he’s got an opportunity. I thought he looked lively and was direct when he came on. Hopefully, there’s more to come. He’s only been with us for two weeks. One that hopefully kicks on again.

“He’s got good pedigree. He’s been a pro. It’s down to him, he’s probably at the stage where now he needs to prove people wrong and he needs to make sure he’s doing the right things off the pitch and he’s got an opportunity. It’s down to him to take it.”.
