Jamie Philpot’s brace plus assist helped Welling United complete back-to-back away victories.
Their 4-1 victory at Hungerford Town took them above Chelmsford City into sixth place in the Vanarama National League South.
Manager Jamie Coyle had to make one change when Ben Jefford failed a fitness test and Archie Johnson deputised.
After just six minutes, Hungerford went ahead. Player Manager Ian Herring lost his marker and headed home a near post corner that gave Bailey Vose no chance.
Jack Jebb almost made an immediate response with a fierce volley that went just over from Coyle’s header back across goal.
Rhys Tyler and Louis Soares were both off target before Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist had a shot saved. Richie Whittingham also fired wide as Hungerford had a good spell.
Adam Coombes went for a diving header for Welling but failed to get a clean connection.
Herring got on the end of another near post corner but Vose was able to save his flick. However it was Welling who drew the next blood. Jebb put Philpot into space and his awareness and skill were accompanied by perfect execution as he lobbed over Oliver Davies from thirty-five yards.
Coombes had a free-kick well saved before Whittingham fired well over just before half-time.
Early in the second half Coombes had another shot saved before he put the Wings ahead with his fourth goal in four games since returning to the club. Olumide Durojaiye sent over a cross and Coombes’ powerful header went in off the post and goalkeeper.
He almost added a further goal with a superb over-head kick that came back off the crossbar before Welling increased their lead. A corner was cleared out as far as Coyle and he showed tremendous technique in firing into the bottom corner from twenty-five yards.
Both Goldberg and Coombes went close twice each before Welling made it four. The excellent Jebb put in a great free-kick and Philpot rose unchallenged to head beyond Davies.
Nicholas Bignall missed a good chance for Hungerford but Welling continued to press and Goldberg was again thwarted by the legs of Davies.
Philpot, looking for a hat-trick tried a chip that was saved easily but Welling enjoyed a comfortable finish to the game and can now prepare for their game with Bath City on Good Friday full of confidence.
