Hungerford Town 1-2 Welling United

Dominant Welling United were good value for their victory at Hungerford Town.

Danny Waldren scored on the stroke of half time and Anthony Cook added the second with twelve minutes remaining. Although James Rusby pulled one back in injury time, it was too little too late.

The Wings came out positively and created plenty of opportunities and could have won more heavily.

Adam Coombes had the first shot at goal with a thirty five yard free kick but Adam Siviter saved comfortably.

Danny Waldren then created an opportunity for Coombes with a low cross but his first time effort went just wide.

Cook’s deep cross picked out Coombes and he headed home but the goal was ruled out for offside and they combined again soon after but Coombes’ first time effort went wide.

Yan Klukowski shot wide for Hungerford before being lucky to escape with a yellow card after a horror challenge on Theo Widdrington.

Rob Swaine was next to come close but his header was nodded off the line by Joe Tomlinson.

Coombes headed over from Cook’s cross before Gavin McCallum suffered a hamstring injury and had to be replaced by Nathan Green.

Bradley Goldberg had a shot well saved before Waldren broke the deadlock. He found Coombes who sent him away with a perfectly weighted pass and Waldren fired home from the edge of the penalty area.

Immediately after the break a good passing move created an opportunity for Cook but he fired straight at the Hungerford goalkeeper.

Widdrington fired over then Goldberg had a shot saved as Welling went for a second goal.

However, Hungerford had their moments and Tomlinson had a shot saved by Dan Wilks before Matt Jones shot well wide.

Swaine headed just over before Welling scored the crucial second. It was similar to the opener as Cook found Coombes who sent him clear with another excellent pass. Cook latched onto it and gave Siviter no chance with a great finish.

Having completed an almost perfect performance, Welling blotted their copybook by conceding in injury time. There was a miscommunication between Wilks and Ejiro Okosieme which ended with the ball dropping kindly for Rusby to finish.

Although there was still time for the hosts to win a corner and launch a long throw, they didn’t trouble Wilks again and Welling claimed the three points.
