Home grown player regulations

The 2016/17 season will be the last campaign where ’emergency’ loans will be permitted.

From next season, the Football League will mirror the Premier League, and all deals – permanent and loans – can only take place during the summer and January windows.

Unattached players will continue to be exempt and can sign for a club outside of the two windows.

Football League clubs are required to name six ‘home grown’ players in their eighteen man match day squad.

The definition of home grown is a player who has spent three years with an affiliated club by the time they reach their twenty-first birthday. FA chairman, Greg Dyke, has proposed that the upper age limit be reduced to eighteen.

Coming from the Republic of Ireland, Charlton Athletic’s Stephen Henderson would be classed as an overseas player but he meets the criteria to be classified as home grown.

Fans may be surprised to know that recent signing, Cristian Ceballos, also qualifies as a home grown player.

The regulations need to be thoroughly understood by a club’s secretary if they are to avoid falling foul of the authorities. Charlton are fortunate to have Chris Parkes, the best administrator in the business, to handle things for them.

Piotr Parzyszek has gone to Danish cub, Randers, on a season long loan.
