Injuries, a continuous merry-go-round of head coaches and behind the scenes upheaval, are some of the things that have made it a difficult season for the Addicks.
The major reason for their current plight though, is their abysmal form at The Valley. Poor form on the road is not unusual in football, but every side is expected to take the majority of points available at home.
Charlton have won just one of their last fifteen home games, a run that stretches back until August. It started so brightly though, an opening day 2-0 win over much fancied Queens Park Rangers, followed by a thrilling 2-1 victory over highly rated Hull, gave Guy Luzon’s team a 100% start to their campaign at The Valley.
Since then, the Addicks only have a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in November to show for their efforts.
Other than the three wins, Charlton have drawn seven and lost seven of their other fourteen home games.
The encounters with Queens Park Rangers, Leeds and Cardiff are the only times the Addicks have kept a clean sheet on home soil. Put simply, The Valley is an easy venue for the opposition to gather points.
And it is not going to get any easier either. A vital clash against Milton Keynes Dons next Tuesday is followed by visits from Middlesbrough, Birmingham, Derby, Brighton and Burnley, all of whom are in the promotion race.
It was revealed by the South London Press on Tuesday that the club have the option to extend Callum Harriott’s contract for another twelve months.
Charlton were keen to sell Harriott in the January window but because he had played for Colchester on a standard loan, he could only play for another club on an emergency loan.
With relegation looking almost certain, the Addicks will be looking to move their high earners on during the summer.
Harriott had a successful spell at Colchester and could be a valuable asset in League One. If they do go down, Charlton may well activate the option in the left-winger’s contract.
