Jake Hill showed just how talented he is as a racing driver last weekend, as he took two victories in the Atom Cup.
Now that might not seem remarkable but it really is, Jake was only at Rockingham to coach Martin James in his races that weekend in the Atom Cup.
However the opportunity arose on Saturday afternoon with the weather inclement that Jake could take one of the vacated slots in the series and race that weekend.
So Jake had to complete all the paperwork and dig out his race suit and helmet and take to the track to see what he could do in qualifying.
What he did was nothing short of extraordinary as he took pole position by 1.1 seconds from his rivals as he made the move on a greasy track that was drying out to slick tyres.
Speaking after qualifying a pleased Jake said: “That was so slippery, the track is always tough to drive on here in these conditions, but I think I just about timed my change to dry weather tyres right, from coaching to pole position.
“What a difference a few hours make! I’m really looking forward to the challenge of two races tomorrow, and of course hoping that Martin gets some more solid points and having two great races. Hopefully we can both get on the podium!!!”
Jake wanted to get on the podium in the two races on Sunday and he went a whole further than he probably expected.
In race one he took the victory and with it also the fastest lap of the race but he had to do that the hard way coming, as he dropped to third place and worked his way back up to first, and took the victory by 1.3 seconds.
He then followed up that race win to make it a double from Rockingham and underline just what a talented driver that he is.
Giving his thoughts after the second race of the weekend, Jake said: “What a start and first lap! Really pleased, again I had to work hard and Andy (Smith) was always close. Thanks so much to Mark, Amy and everyone at Ariel Atom and the Atom Cup – and to Martin James for giving me the ‘ok’ to do it. I’ve loved it and would really recommend anyone wanting to race to try the series out.
“Its ace, whatever your experience. Now my focus is raising the budget to race at Le Mans in three weeks. But for now I just want to enjoy it!”
As Jake said he is looking to raise the budget to be able to race at Le Mans in the next few weeks and it would be great to see such a talent on the grid. Anyone who can assist Jake in raising the budget to be able to race should email [email protected]
