Jake Hill made his debut in the British Touring Car Championship for Wrotham based Addison-Lee Motorbase and he loved every minute.
The young Kent racing driver harbours ambitions of being in the BTCC fulltime and his showing for the Motorbase squad will have helped his prospects.
Speaking about the opportunity he was afforded, Jake said: “It was absolutely brilliant, it is hard to explain it and put it into words it was that good.
“Everything went to plan really for me, apart from the last race. I got what I wanted from the weekend which was my Jack Sears trophy win, that was my aim for the weekend and I obviously achieved that so I was very happy.
“I had been speaking to Motorbase for a few months and did the test at the end of the last year and through that they kept me in mind when they knew that Liam couldn’t do the Croft round. They thought the best person for the drive would be me and they very kindly gave me the drive and we went from there.”
By driving in the BTCC round at Croft it gave Jack the opportunity to showcase his driving talents and to put himself in the window to earn other drives in the series.
He added: “It all went really well and from my performance at Croft and how everything went, I definitely think there is going to be more. There is still a possibility that I might get a drive later on in the season.
“That is all touch and go, as it isn’t certain whether Liam is available to drive in the rounds or not, we will just have to see, it is all just maybe and I wouldn’t know yet what round it could potentially be.
“Throughout the testing and qualifying I am always in the garage at race weekends, keeping a firm eye on what’s going on. I can see how the team are getting on, how they are working and how they are working with Liam and how the Touring Car is progressing.
“I like to be involved and keep an eye on Motorbase on how they are doing and I am still with them over a race weekend.”
With regards to the rest of the year and whether Jake has anything concrete lined up, he revealed he is turning his attention to 2014.
He said: “I haven’t got anything else really lined-up on the schedule, I just need to be prepared to step in for Liam later on in the season, if for some reason he is not able to race.
“I have got to keep myself fit, and when the time comes I can step in and do my best and hopefully as well as I did this time.
“I really do miss the racing every weekend, it is quite painful to be honest and to get out there and do what I do at Croft it was a big relief for me. I have proven to myself and to others that although I am not racing, I am still sharp and I can still drive as well as I did when I last stepped out of a car.
“It is nice to still have that feeling, and for the first time to race again and actually win was special as well.
“The plan is to try and do the NGTC next season and looking to that and if I can do anything with Motorbase that would be a brilliant first step. That is the aim and nothing is set in stone, it is just what I am hoping to do next year.
“I am going to throw everything into getting onto the BTCC grid, I am really open to doing some GT racing as well, and perhaps some GT3 racing, whether that be British or start to go abroad, and I would love to do that regardless of getting a Touring Car drive.”
Apart from racing Jake also coaches a young driver in the Ginetta Junior Championship and he is finding that wholly rewarding.
“I am coaching young Jack Rawles in Ginetta Junior’s, so I am with him over a Friday to a Sundays, so I am still keeping busy and working with another driver which is brilliant. Obviously doing as well as I did in juniors it is nice to give some of that back to someone else who needs the help.
“I spend time with the drivers, I look at their data with them and we go through every part of the race track and each individual sectors, we look at the on-board footage and analyse and see where he can improve and where the car can improve.
“When I was coming up through the series I never had any data or any coaching, the first time I ever had any data was when I drove in the BTCC at Croft and the testing for the team. My dad taught me a really good technique and driving in general and I have just carried that through with me.
“The Ginetta juniors was probably the best car I have driven in terms of pure fun and it is probably why I got on with it so well. To be able to pass on what I know about that car to Jack in his first season is great, as I can see him getting better every weekend. It is working really well.”
