Hessenthaler wants to finish on a high

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler is keen to finish the season on a high despite missing out on the play-offs.

Hessenthaler will be in the dug-out at Priestfield for the last time this season for the visit of Morecambe having spent the past week in Spain on a scouting mission.

He has been at an Under-20s tournament in Andalucia as he looks to bolster his side’s squad for next season.

Despite the focus on next season, Hessenthaler is still keen on finishing the season with a win over the Shrimps.

He said: “We have another game to left play this season and we want to concentrate on beating Morecambe and finishing the season at home on a high.”

A win against Morecambe could see The Gills finish eighth for the second season in a row, but defeat could drop them to eleventh in League Two.

The trip to Spain has opened up a whole new avenue of potential new players to Hessenthaler and he admitted to the club’s official website that bringing in foreign players could be the way to go in the long term:

“When I walked in to this club many, many years ago there wasn’t much talk about foreign players coming to Gillingham, but why not?”

Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga has proven to be an excellent overseas acquisition for Gillingham and this summer fans could see  more names from afar making their way to Priestfield.
