Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler was less than impressed as his side capitulated at the Greenhous Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Goals from Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Mark Wright ensured the Shrews took the three points, whilst The Gills slipped to seventh in League Two and fall further behind those looking to secure automatic promotion.
It was Gillingham’s lack of an incisive edge along with their inability to defend properly that cost them dearly and Hessenthaler was far from impressed with his side: ”
We were nowhere near it to be honest,” Hessenthaler told the club’s official website. “I’m certainly not happy and I’m disappointed for the fans because we didn’t just turn up at all.
“Our body language, even in the warm up, we didn’t look like we were at the races and I think that showed in the performance. You can carry a couple of players but the whole team just didn’t turn up and it’s not acceptable.
“It just wasn’t good enough and for me to say that hurts. I’ve told them that in the dressing room and that should hurt them as well. If we want to achieve something this season, we’re kidding ourselves if we’re going to turn up and play games like that.”
Gillingham have shown throughout this season that they can beat anyone on their day with the Boxing Day win at Crawley showing they can beat the best.
Defeats at places like Shrewsbury and Dagenham could end up costing them dear come the end of the season.
If they really believe that they are candidates for automatic promotion, the players need to start showing what they are capable of and soon, starting with the game against AFC Wimbledon at Priestfield next Saturday.
