Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler insists signing striker Kevin Lisbie is still an option after initially looking unlikely.
The 32 year old former Colchester United and Ipswich Town striker was quoted earlier in the week saying that he wouldn’t be keen on dropping down to League Two, but that appears now not to be the case.
Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent: “I’ve had a conversation with Kevin, he was disappointed with press that he wasn’t prepared to drop down.
“He said he would be, but he wants to keep his options open.”
With Gillingham still in need of a striker and Lisbie a free agent, a deal still could be in the pipeline, but the former Charlton man seems to be more likely to be looking to sign for a Championship or League One club.
“He phoned me out of decency because he knows me. He told me he’s a Gillingham fan, he’s a good lad, he thought he might have offended me, the club and the fans.”
“He’s trialling somewhere, he’d like to stay at a higher division, I can’t blame him for that,” said Hessenthaler.
“We said we’d like him to come to Gillingham and he never ruled it out.”
The Gills go into Saturday’s game with Accrington Stanley having failed to score in their past couple of games and without Jack Payne (knee) and Paulo Gazzaniga (mumps).
