Hessenthaler hints at Kedwell return

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler says “there’s every chance” Danny Kedwell will start against Northampton on Saturday afternoon.

The former AFC Wimbledon striker missed the wins against Torquay United and Oxford United with a toe injury and then had to settle for a place on the bench against Swindon and Morecambe.

Those two defeats have left Hessenthaler thinking about a change in personnel for the Northampton game at Priestfield this weekend with Kedwell one of those in his mind:

“Keds is on his way back but he’s not done a lot of training,” he told Sky Sports.

“We just felt he needed a full week’s training this week and we’ll have him back for the weekend.”

“There’s every chance he’ll start the game.”

That could see either Jo Kuffour or Frank Nouble dropped from the starting eleven, or even a change in shape to accomodate all three.

Whoever plays, Hessenthaler admitted that Saturday’s match was in need of “a big performance”.

“We’re quite good at home,” he added.

“We always put pressure on ourselves every time we come away and get beaten.”

“We’ve got to put a big performance in against Northampton.”

With former Gills striker Adebayo Akinfenwa back with the Cobblers, The Gills defence will be tested once again.

Having dropped to tenth in League Two, Gillingham will be desperate to claim all three points before they start to lose touch with the promotion contenders.
