Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler hasn’t given up hope of making the play-offs after Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Swindon Town.
The Gills go into their final two games of the season, still some four points behind Crewe in seventh place and seemingly unlikely to make the play-offs.
However, Hessenthaler insists his side will keep trying to make it into the top seven until it’s mathematically impossible:
“All we can do is go to Northampton and win there, and it might go down to the last game of the season where we’ll need to win again,” he said.
“Anything could happen. Winning has given us another opportunity for next week.”
“We were happy to have won the game but watching them celebrate, that’s what we want,” he said.
“That was hard to take, but are we out of it? If we win our next two games, who knows? We are still in it and Gillingham still have a chance of getting into the play-offs.”
Even winning at Northampton may not be enough for The Gills should Crewe win, but for Hessenthaler should they miss out, it will be another season of disappointment:
“We don’t do things easy here over the years. We set out to get promoted like last year but we missed out.”
“This year it’s going to be a tough ask. We’re disappointed we haven’t got in the top three but I think it’s a very thin line between success and failure.”
“We’re a good side but we haven’t been consistent enough, we have had injury problems but we haven’t been consistent enough to make the top three.”
Should results go against Gillingham and Hessenthaler this weekend, he will quickly switch his attention to next season with over a dozen players set to be out of contract at Priestfield.
