Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler couldn’t hide his disappointment at seeing his side lose their unbeaten run on Friday night.
His side had taken a seventh minute lead with Danny Kedwell netting his tenth goal of the season, but they failed to capitalise on many chances and the Daggers went on to score twice and win the game.
Defeat sees The Gills fall further behind Crawley and Cheltenham who both recorded victories and Hessenthaler was left frustrated that his side had beaten the league leaders on Boxing Day and then failed to show their best just four days later:
“We gave away two silly goals. We didn’t show the standard we’re capable of.”
“It’s a sad way to end a decent run and the year, to be fair, especially after going 1-0 up.”
“We’re disappointed, we had a good 20 minutes in the first half where we’ve scored and then we’ve hit the post a couple of times and the keeper’s made a good save as well and that’s where we perhaps should have gone on from there”
“You need a bit of the rub of the green with a couple of situations that have hit the post but then we wasn’t good enough in the end. We’ve given them two goals, two silly goals that could have been avoided and it was a disappointing night.”
“It’s a disappointing end to the year but we know that we didn’t show the standard that we’ve been showing for the last few weeks.”
Hessenthaler’s frustration was shared by the 1,300 travelling Gills fans who had sung their hearts out for their side and they will be desperate for the team to get back to winning ways when Aldershot come to Priestfield on Bank Holiday Monday.
