Hessenthaler facing selection dilemma

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler admits he faces a selection dilemma after his side won 5-2 at Torquay United.

Two first half goals from former Torquay strikr Jo Kuffour were cancelled out in the opening six minutes of the second half from Chris Robertson and Danny Stevens before a foul on Kuffour enabled Luke Rooney to put Gillingham back ahead from the penalty spot.

Rooney’s box-to-box run teed-up Frank Nouble for Gillingham’s fourth goal before Chris Whelpdale’s last-minute cross-cum-

shot flew in to complete Torquay’s misery.

That win has taken the Gills back up to ninth in League Two, just two points behind third placed Oxford United who visit Priestfield next Saturday.

With Danny Kedwell, Charlie Lee, Andy Frampton and Jack Payne all the frame for a comeback next weekend, Hessenthaler admits it won’t be easy to choose his side:

“We will be looking a lot brighter, injury-wise, I`m sure next week. I should get four or five back so selecting a side won’t be so easy. That’s what I`m here for but the players that have played haven`t done themselves any harm.

“We had to step up to the plate a little bit and some of the players knew they had been off it a little bit.

“But they showed what they are capable of and it was terrific for Chris Whelpdale because he did put in a great shift,

especially in the second half, and he got a good goal as well.”

As for the game itself, Hessenthaler admitted that it was hard to watch from his position:

“That was good to watch as a spectator but a nightmare for us to watch on the bench.”

“We got a couple of goals first half, perhaps fortuitous, we said at half-time 2-0 is a dangerous scoreline and if we concede early we’ve got a problem and that’s what happened.”

“At 2-2 I could only see one winner and it wasn’t us, but we were comfortable in the end, but we defend too deep and we are our own worst enemies at times.”

Hessenthaler is right that they have the ability of shooting themselves in the foot sometimes, but thankfully on Saturday they packed their scoring boots for the bus trip down to Devon.

Following the Oxford game, The Gills have trips to Swindon Town and Morecambe to come and Hessenthaler will be hoping for at least seven points from a possible nine if they are to keep up their promotion push.

Before that, they have a game with Welling United on Monday night in the Second Round of the Kent Senior Cup.

Hessenthaler will send a fringe side to Park View Road to play Jamie Day’s side with the likes of Ashley Miller, Callum Davies and Jack Evans given the chance to play.
