Gills manager Andy Hessenthaler claimed his side are the “Jekyll and Hyde” of League Two after their 2-1 defeat at Morecambe.
Goals in either half from Garry Hunter and Kevin Ellison gave the Shrimps the advantage and, although Gillingham hit back with a 92nd-minute penalty through Frank Nouble, it was too little too late.
After a second successive defeat, Hessenthaler said: “We had a lot of possession but didn’t really do enough with it and made mistakes to give the goals away which we just can’t afford to do at this level.
“We got in their final third a lot but we didn’t seem to have the belief to break them down and we need to show more desire in the danger area and score goals.
“We are so Jekyll and Hyde at the moment it is unbelievable. It’s two steps forward and two steps back and we need to look to find some consistency.
“In midweek we put in a good performance and lost at Swindon but we just huffed and puffed and made more decisions with the football. If we are not going to score we have to make sure we don’t concede and we didn’t do that.”
That could mean changes for Hessenthaler’s side with Northampton Town to come to Priestfield on Saturday.
With the likes of Danny Kedwell, Andy Frampton and Joe Martin sitting on the bench, Hessenthaler may well be tempted to change things round to freshen up the side before the blip becomes something bigger.
