On Tuesday, Herne Bay entertain Welling United in the Kent Senior Cup Second Round as the two clubs take a break from league action.
Although Herne Bay play in a league that is two levels below Welling, should they play their first team, they have every chance of winning the game. They are having a good season in the Isthmian League South East Division and will be in the play-off places if they win their game in hand. Welling are having a tough time and are bottom but one in the Vanarama National South and surviving from relegation is their number one priority.
On Saturday, Herne Bay drew nil-nil at VCD Athletic. It was a game ruled by defences with neither team creating much during the ninety minutes of play. They have a strong home record having won eight, drawn two and lost three.
To qualify for this round they beat Sevenoaks Town four-two on penalties after the match finished at one apiece. Ben Davisson put the Oaks ahead but Kieron Campbell levelled before the hosts went on to win the shoot-out.
Peter Taylor’s Welling come into the game on the back of a two-one defeat at Slough Town having led through a Dipo Akinyemi penalty. Their away record is not good having won two, drawn three and lost nine. They were given a first round bye.
Taylor says will be naming a make-shift starting eleven “I’ve got a few trialists coming in that have signed on non-contract for us. There’ll be still five or six (first team squad) players playing but there will be other people, because that they’ve played a lot of football, that I’ll be resting.”
The winners of this tie progress into the quarter finals and, although neither teams’ main target, could lead to an end of season showpiece final.
