The proverbial game of two halves! “We were outstanding first half and played some outstanding football”, said Bay manager Sam Denly, “but you’ve got to play for 90 minutes and second half we were poor, there’s no real excuse for it.”
Boasting an envious home record, Bay raced into a two goal lead inside the first 17 minutes. In the 9th, Danny Williams flicked home from Michael Turner’s free kick from the right to open the home side’s account then Joe Nelder rolled in Steven Ita’s intelligent diagonal ball in the 17th.
Bay were purring and, would have been cruising, had Dan Parkinson not headed wide from close range with the goal at his mercy 6 minutes later.
The threat of an avalanche, however, was avoided as Chipstead started to turn the tables and duly pulled a goal back 6 minutes from the break when Derek Tieku, signed from basement side Walton Casuals this week by Chips, slotted home with Bay ‘keeper Jack Delo appearing slow to come off his line.
Immediately after the restart scoring chances were exchanged. Stuart King went close to extending Bay’s lead when his effort rose over the bar and Delo was at his best to deny Chipstead a second when he tipped Tieku’s shot round the post for a corner. This was good entertainment and the visitor’s equaliser duly came in the 65th minute, Dyett heading home a right wing cross.
Herne Bay, now living on their nerves, were forced back time and time again and with just 9 minutes remaining Will Turl dealt the killer blow when he swept home what proved to be Chipstead’s winner, a goal that dented the Bay home formbook and gave the Chips their first win in a month.
“I don’t know what happened second half”, said Denly, “I’m disappointed with the lads and I’ve told them that. The FA Trophy tie, next Saturday, probably comes at a good time after that result today. They’re good days out and we’ll be looking to get a result.”
