On Saturday, Welling United head to Hereford United for a Skrill Premier encounter featuring the teams placed 11th and 12th in the league.
Both teams have already suffered more injuries than they would have liked at this early stage of the season.
Player-manager Jamie Day, one of Welling’s injured players, bolstered his squad by bringing in Harry Beautyman from Sutton United only to see him limp off during his full debut at Woking last Saturday. Callum Webb, yet to make his league bow, also joined the injury list prior to the game at Kingfield.
Better news for Wings’ fans is that Lee Clarke and Kiernan Hughes-Mason may be able to feature.
Hereford have strengthened their squad by bringing in two players on short term loans. Michael West has joined the Bulls from Crewe Alexandra on a one month deal. He has twice featured for Crewe’s first team off the substitute’s bench this season, although he has not been involved in recent weeks.
Martin Foyle then added utility player Paul Green until the end of September on loan from fellow Skrill Premier club Forest Green Rovers.
Last weekend was a tough one for non league players with two games in three days. A scintillating first half hour, in which they netted three times, laid the foundations for Welling’s exciting 4-2 victory at Woking before they were held by Salisbury City in a goal-less draw at Park View Road on Monday.
Meanwhile, Sam Smith’s 51st minute goal was sufficient to give Hereford victory over Tamworth on Saturday before Alfreton Town defeated them 2-1 on Monday, which was the Bulls first loss of the season.
Welling goalkeeper Lee Butcher’s short term contract expires at the end of August so the game at Edgar Street should be his last game for Welling. Doubtless he will be keen to add to his two clean sheets already recorded.
