Kent’s Barry Hawkins is through to the last 16 of the Scottish Open thanks to a win over John Higgins yesterday evening.
His victory over Higgins was a 4-3 with the four highest breaks, as the Hawk soars into the next round. He was in good form and grew into the match, coming from 2-1 down to go take the match on a decider. In a match that has some awkward frames due to the run of the balls.
In the last 64 he beat Alexander Ursenbacher 4-2 to set-up the tie with the four time world champion.
Hawkins is in a good run of form at the moment as he went into the event in Edinburgh on the back of a runner-up spot at the UK Championship.
He lost 10-8 to world number one Judd Trump and it is the closest he has come to winning a coveted triple crown title.
That run does mean that he is back in the worlds top 16, which means he will be at the Masters in January, the invitational event for the top 16.
He will be hoping to remain in the top 16 so he is seeded for the World Championship and not have to qualify. A long run at the Scottish Open will help him to do that.
It is incidentally the furthest that the Hawk has ever been in the completion, as he looks to make his first quarter final in Scotland.
Speaking after his win against Higgins, he said: “We both had plenty of chances early doors and just run out of position or doing something Stupid.
“John just said to me at the end there that he thought he brought me down, there is no chance of that.
“It was one of those that was a bit of a struggle at the start and I felt like I stated cueing the ball a bit better towards the end. It was a bit of a strange one really.”
He takes on Wu Yize later on today for a place in the quarter finals.
