Hawkins defeated in Crucible thriller
Hawkins defeated in Crucible thriller

Barry Hawkins dream of a final appearance at The Crucible are over after losing 13-11 to Matthew Stevens in the World Championship last 16.

Stevens will now face Ryan Day in an all-Welsh quarter-final in his bid to make it third time lucky at the Sheffield venue having lost to Mark Williams in the 2000 final and Shaun Murphy in 2005.

His win over Hawkins was not the most memorable match of recent times, but it was certainly effective enough.

Stevens won a scrappy opening frame of the afternoon to move 9-8 clear before runs of 49 and 65 carried the world number 14 10-8 ahead. Hawkins put together breaks of 64 and 63 as the pair headed for the mid-session interval level at 10-10.

The next three frames were scrappy affairs with Stevens winning two of them to lead 12-10. Hawkins ran in 51 to keep alive his hopes only for his opponent to close matters out with a closing break of 57.
