Esmee Hawkey will return to the Porsche Carrera Cup GB championship for a third-straight season in 2020, joining championship winning outfit Team Parker Racing.
Taking three class victories last year, including back-to-back wins at Thruxton, along with six podium finishes, she led the standings throughout the middle of the season, but two separate incidents at Silverstone, where she took contact from other drivers, curtailed any chance of championship success.
It was also a busy time for Esmee as she took part in the W Series, her first time racing a single seater of any type. Learning lots and demonstrating her raw ability with a superb qualifying session at Brands Hatch, where she qualified third fastest, she narrowly missed out on automatically securing a spot in the series again for 2020, but for now is happy to put her full focus into GT racing.
Team Parker Racing first competed in the Carrera Cup in its inaugural year, in 2003, where it helped Barry Horne to first place in the standings. It has taken four Drivers’ Championship titles, five Pro-Am or Pro-Am 1 titles, and three Pro-Am 2 or Am crowns.
Esmee will make her first appearance with the team at the championship media day in March, before starting competition at the opening round of the season at Donington Park in Leicestershire over the weekend of March 27-29.
Speaking about the opportunity, Hawkey said: “I’m really excited to be joining Team Parker Racing for my third year in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB. After being in a single-car team for the past two seasons it will be interesting to join what is looking like a great line up at Team Parker Racing. There will be some top Pro drivers in the team who I am looking forward to working alongside, sharing data with, and ultimately fighting against on track.
“Last year was extremely busy, racing two totally different cars in both the Carrera Cup and W Series. It was difficult jumping between the two, but I still proved that I had the outright speed in both.
“I’m really glad I had the opportunity to race the W Series’ F3 car as it introduced me to racing with downforce which I had never experienced before. This will benefit me when the time is right to step up to GT3, and Team Parker Racing is the perfect place as they can help facilitate this.
“I’m looking forward to working with Team Parker Racing and meeting all the team members there. I feel I have unfinished business and things to prove in the series. I can’t wait to get started and show my true potential.”
