Harrow Borough 1-3 Welling United

Despite being short in numbers, Welling United completed a fairly comfortable London Senior Cup semi-final victory at Harrow Borough.

After a bright start, Welling went ahead with an excellent goal. Josh Hill picked out Montel Agyemang and his pass sliced open the Harrow defence and Danny Mills strode through to fire home powerfully.

Looking for a quick response, Josh Andrew went on a run down the right and put over an excellent cross that was headed out superbly by Lanre Oyebanjo.

Unfortunately, his evening was ended three minutes later when he strained himself stretching for a loose ball and he had to be replaced by Julien Anau.

Borough did then have a good chance when veteran striker Ryan Moss was sent clear but Dan Wilks came out quickly and made an excellent save.

Mills then came close again when getting on the end of a deep Anau cross but his header was tipped over acrobatically by Berkley Laurencin.

He was called upon to make another good save from the corner when Agyemang’s delivery was headed back to him by Hill. He fancied the angle and sent in a fierce drive that Laurencin beat out unconvincingly.

From another Welling corner, Harrow mounted a break away and had a four on three break but it broke down and Welling countered the counter-attack to go two-nil up. Zack Newton raced away down the left wing before cutting back and curling a right footer into the far corner.

Two minutes after the break, Welling went three up. Anau turned his man on the half way line and out-paced him down the wing before laying it off to Mills. Although the Wings’ centre-forward still had a lot to do, he made it look easy as he cut back and shot low into the bottom corner.

Although the game was as good as over, the hosts were still prepared to have a go and Moss just failed to get onto the end of Andrews’ cross before they came even closer. Mark Bitmead’s shot came back off the post as far as Andrews. His shot was blocked by Gavin McCallum and rebounded to Mitchal Gough. He hit his effort cleanly but it was too straight and Wilks was able to get down to save.

McCallum then broke away from his emergency left back position to have a shot deflected wide before Newton spun and shot but his effort had no power and was saved comfortably.

Brendan Kiernan gave his marker a torrid time and after being found by Newton, his shot was deflected just over before Agyemang was awry with another powerful drive.

Andrews pulled back for substitute Anthony O’Connor but the hosts did pull one back with two minutes remaining. Excellence Muhemba created the chance and O’Connor finished at the far post for a consolation goal.

Steve King’s team now have a final with Brentford B at the end of the season with a provisional date of 7th May at Wingate and Finchley.
