Manager Neil Harris admits his side gave Gillingham fans little to cheer as they lost 2-0 to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.
Going into the game having won their two previous home games since Harris took charge, Gills fans went into the match full of enthusiasm and hope.
That hope was swiftly taken away in the second half at Priestfield as a shot shy Gillingham side failed to land a glove on a well drilled Plymouth outfit.
Lacking a real attacking threat in the swirling wind and rain, Gillingham looked clueless at times and Harris admits his team were second best:]
“We didn’t perform today, we were not good enough today, and the fans stuck with us. We gave them very little to cheer about with our performance, and that has to change.”
“They were better than us, let’s be honest. They were a cohesive and organised team. It was a sucker punch right at the start of the second half. We gave away the ball for both goals cheaply.”
“It was a real effort by the Football Club to get the game on. Being here yesterday (Friday) was disastrous scenes around the stadium. For both sets of fans to get here is a testament to them and their love of their Football Clubs.”
Backed by 822 travelling fans, you could see why Plymouth Argyle are play-off contenders in League One, but it doesn’t take away from the fact Gillingham look like a side slipping slowly towards relegation.
Tuesday night’s clash with AFC Wimbledon now takes on extra importance and Harris admits his side need to improve. He said:
“We have to make sure Tuesday night we are better than we were today.”
That is an understatement if there ever is one. Olly Lee looks like he is playing out of position and Vadaine Oliver looks isolated at times. Tom Dickson-Peters seems set to drop to the bench with Charlie Kelman likely to replace him in the side.
Whoever takes to the field at Priestfield on Tuesday night, one thing is for certain, lose and Gillingham will then be eight points behind their opponents and further cut adrift in the relegation zone. Losing just isn’t an option.
