Manager Neil Harris is happy his Gillingham side are finally putting on a show that their fans can be proud of.

Saturday’s injury time winner over Carlisle United at Priestfield saw The Gills pull ever further away from the League Two relegation zone and put a real dent in the visitors’ promotion hopes.

Shaun Williams was the man on target as Gillingham came out 1-0 winners after a tense and close game in Medway.

Having now picked up 30 points from a possible 45, The Gills have climbed to 16th in the table, twelve points clear of the drop zone with eight games left to play.

Having seen his side pick up the late winner on the weekend, Gillingham manager Neil Harris said: “That’s great for us as a group and brilliant for the fans. People work so hard to earn their money to come to games and they’re not leaving early any more.”

“They want to stay until the end because they want to clap the team off and, on days like today (Saturday), they trust and hope we might come up with something at the end.”

The manager also had special praise for midfielder Shaun Williams who popped up with yet another crucial goal after an impressive display. Harris said:

“It’s a great finish from Shaun. I spoke to him at length this morning about his role today – the old boy has played back-to-back 90 minutes on Saturday and Tuesday this week and I wanted to see if he could go again.”

“He managed the game with his brain and his quality. It’s no coincidence he scores the winning goal in the 94th minute after ending up in their six-yard box.”

“I can’t praise him enough; he’s a top professional, he’s been magnificent.”

Gillingham now prepare for the very long trip to Barrow on Saturday, with the home side currently tenth in the table.

Pick up another three points on the road and Harris & co can start thinking about next season an a possible assault on the League Two title.
