For the second Monday evening running, the Cray Wanderers U21 side came from behind to grab a draw this time against mid-table Haringey Borough at Coles Park.
The Wands looked to be down and out at half time trailing 2-0 to their North London opponents but a stirring second half comeback saw Cray grab an unlikely point and showed plenty of character when things looked to be going against them.
On the new 3G surface at Haringey, it was Borough who started off the quicker and but for keeper Sean Law could have been 3-0 up in the first ten minutes.
Firstly in the sixth minute, Issa Segaruma had a shot palmed away brilliantly by Law and then saved a header on goal by Remi Gyimah. Macauley White then curled a free kick wide before Law excelled again when Segaruma was played onside and his effort on goal was met by a great sprawling save by the young Wands keeper.
Then Cray showed their first glimpse in attack of what they could do when Joel Massamba used great power and pace to work an opening down the right and his curling effort was pushed over the bar by keeper Curtis Jackson.
However, in the 14th minute, Haringey took the lead when Micah Jackson down the left put over a teasing cross into the box which was bundled into the net from three yards out by Segaruma.
Cray went back on the attack and from a corner the ball fell to Connor Phelps but his strong header was well saved by Jackson.
Cray had a lot of trouble at time coping with the home sides movement and pace and Farsha Roohy and Wisley Baltazar both fired wide for Haringey. For Cray a strong run out from the back by the impressive Abdul Wahab saw him brought down close to goal for a free kick.
Segaruma lashed a volley over the bar for Haringey and then somehow contrived to miss a glorious chance when another Jackson cross was turned wide from close range by Baltazar.
A second goal was coming and duly arrived in the 35th minute. From a free kick out on the left, White’s excellent ball into the box was headed powerfully home by Gyimah.
Before the break Cray got back into things a bit more and Theo Whyte had a shot which Jackson fielded and forced a couple of corners which saw balls go across goal with no-one to follow up.
Half Time: 2-0 
Phil Foster at half time made three substitutions in a bid to change the flow of the game and they certainly worked as Cray looked a different side after the break.
Firstly, five minutes into the half Phelps fine pass found Edgar Morais whose shot on goal was deflected onto the top of the crossbar and over for a corner. Sustained pressure led to four corners in quick succession and from the third of these the ball came out to Theo Newton whose well struck shot was tipped over the bar by Jackson.
Cray deservedly pulled a goal back in the 54th minute when Erwin Kurz made a fine run down the right and his ball into the box was controlled and drilled low into the net by the impressive Wahab.
Cray were right back in the game now and shortly after, Newton’s free kick was saved by the keeper and then on the hour saw a chipped shot go narrowly over the top.
The last half hour was incredibly open as both sides pushed forward to attack. For Haringey, Micah Jackson curled a free kick wide whilst Newton shot over the bar again for Cray.
Segaruma saw a shot blocked inside the area after a burst of pace down the right and then from a free kick Baltazar saw his free kick on goal pushed behind by Law. It should really have been 3-1 but Ayuub Ali blazed high over the bar when well placed.
Into the last twenty minutes and Kurz saw a cross shot go narrowly across goal and then Morais set up Wahab who just couldn’t get the ball under control and his effort was scrambled away by Jackson. Then Morais fired over the bar for Cray and for Haringey, White’s shot too was pushed behind by Law.
With five minutes to go, Cray got the break they deserved when Mason Simms found Kurz inside the area who was bundled over for an obvious penalty.
Morais got up to take the kick but his shot was well saved by Jackson but following up the rebound he squared the ball across to Kurz who tapped the ball in to give Cray a goal they richly deserved.
In the frantic last few minutes that remained both sided had chances to win the game. Firstly Cray had an excellent chance when Morais was played through down the left, took the ball past the keeper but from a tight angle curled a cross shot wide with no one able to get on the end of the cross.
Then in stoppage time Haringey should really have won it when Micah Jackson put a tremendous ball into the box but somehow with time, Ali managed to miskick in front of goal and the ball went wide to Cray’s relief. Cray had to withstand a fair barrage of late pressure but managed to hold on for a point which seemed so far away at half time.
Cray now have a little breather next week before resuming their league fixtures on Monday, 3rd October when they are at home to Great Wakering Rovers. One thing we do know is this side do not give up and are well worth a watch for anyone who hasn’t yet seen them play.
