On Tuesday evening, Welling United visit Hampton and Richmond Borough in their first game under the management of Warren Feeney.
Following draws at fellow strugglers Billericay Town and at home to Bath City, Mark Goldberg and his fellow directors decided that it was time for a change and relieved Peter Taylor of his duties.
Former Northern Ireland striker, Feeney, comes in at a difficult time for the club with bottom club Billericay just four points behind the Wings having played one game fewer. It is likely that a new manager will bring in new players and they will have to gel quickly if Welling are to pull away from the drop zone.
On Saturday, Hampton had their bye week and will have had someone watching Welling’s game with Bath but how much knowledge they will have of Feeney’s preferred way of playing is questionable. On Friday, Welling signed two new players on loan, Henry Burnett, and Taylor Curran, and both may make their debuts at the Beveree Stadium.
Mid-table Hampton appear to be safe from the drop but would have a lot to do to make it to the play-offs as is demonstrated by their record of nine wins, six draws and thirteen defeats. At home they have won five and lost six of their thirteen games.
When they met at Park View Road earlier in the season it was an example of a game of two halves as Welling were two-nil up at the break but collapsed in the second half to be beaten three-two. The Wings’ supporters would love to see a reversal of that result to ease their fears.
